Jonathan Spence profiles a variety of foreign advisers and experts who went to China between 1840 and 1945. Excluding American military, chose one of the individuals we discussed in class (Peter Parker, Frederick Townsend Ward, W. A. P. Martin, and Edward Hume) as the subject of your essay. What were this individual’s initial goals in China? How did his encounter with reality in China transform him? How did his understanding of China change over time? Ultimately, what, if any, positive contribution did this adviser make to China? 2. After the Opium War American missionaries were active in China in a variety of different and sometimes conflicting roles, diplomatic, educational, medical and evangelical. Chose one of the following American missionaries: Peter Parker, Hudson Taylor, W.A.P. Martin, Edward Hume or Elijah Bridgman, and discuss their careers in China. How did your chosen missionary balance his religious and secular work in China? 3. Death Blow to Corrupt Doctrines, was a collection of anti-Christian propaganda and placards that attacked the Western religion on a number of grounds. What were some of the criticisms made against Christianity? How was this propaganda designed to incite loathing and disgust for Christianity? To what degree was this propaganda responsible for anti-Christian violence? To what degree to Western missionary activities contribute to violence? 4. David Shambaugh discusses three international relations strategies for “integrating” China into the international world order: realism, liberalism, and constructivism. Briefly, describe the differences in each strategy. Which approach does Shambaugh advocate for the future? Which, if any of these strategies do you think is most promising? Use an example of Sino-American relations to illustrate your point. 5. What were the political, economic, and racial factors that shape US immigration policy during the last quarter of the nineteenth century (1875-1900)? What was the major legislation that restricted Chinese immigration? What was the significance of the Supreme Court decision in United States v. Wong Kim Ark? 6. In the book, Outsourced Children, Leslie Wang devotes a chapter to discussing how abandoned infants went from ‘missing girls’ to “America’s sweethearts.” How do you explain the phenomenon of international adoption from China to the US from 1995 to its peak in 2005? According to Wang, how did the migration of abandoned female infants to Western nations transform their social value and stoke foreign interest in China and involvement in Chinese social welfare institutions?
